THE ILLUSTRATED FIELD GUIDE / ORBIT

Bring every marker home.

Move each numbered marker to the outlined target at twelve o’clock on its ring. Every ring has eight positions. Rings are linked: turning one also turns its immediate inner neighbour by the same amount.

01

Locate a marker and its target

Three concentric rings with eight positions each, numbered markers away from the top and dashed targets at twelve o’clock.
Every marker belongs in the outlined circle at the top.

The filled numbered circle is a marker; the dashed circle at the top is its target. The outermost ring is 1, followed by 2, 3 and so on as you move inward. A check beside a ring tells you it is aligned with the target.

02

Notice what turns together

Three rings with ghost markers and arrows showing that one clockwise turn moves only the outer ring and its immediate inner neighbour.
One turn of ring 1 moves markers 1 and 2 together.

Choose clockwise or anticlockwise to move a ring one position, or 45 degrees. Turning ring 1 also turns ring 2. It does not turn ring 3. The innermost ring has no inner neighbour, so it moves alone. Each control reminds you which other ring it turns.

03

Work from the outside inward

The outer marker is at the top; arrows on the two inner rings show their next movement while the outer ring is marked as staying put.
Ring 1 stays aligned while ring 2 takes its turn.

Align the outer ring first. Then use ring 2 to align the next marker: its movement leaves ring 1 alone. Continue inward, adjusting the next pair until you reach the centre. This order lets you keep the alignments you have already made.

04

Make the final alignment

All three ring markers sit in their top targets, with checks beside their numbered controls.
Three markers, three targets: this system is aligned.

Finish with the innermost ring, which can turn by itself. All markers must be in their top targets at the same time. Easy has three rings, Medium four and Hard five. Undo reverses an entire turn, including its linked neighbour.

THE FINISH LINE

What counts as complete?

Every marker must occupy the top target together. The aligned counter reaches the number of rings. Turns are counted, but there is no maximum or time limit.

ONE TO REMEMBER

A common wrong turn

A ring turns only its immediate inner neighbour, not every ring inside it. If an inner marker moves out of place while you solve an outer ring, that is expected: you will solve the inner one afterwards.

Controls & a little help

Use the labelled left/right controls with mouse, touch, Tab and Enter. Hint performs one useful turn from the outside inward. Undo reverses both linked movements of your last turn. Ring labels also describe positions for screen-reader users; the top target is position 1 of 8.
